Pongaroa is situated at the crossroads of Route
52 and the Pahiatua - Makuri - Akitio Road. Pongaroa is a great
midway stop between Wellington and Hawke's Bay on scenic Route
52 through some great New Zealand sheep and beef hill country.
Take time to wander through the tranquil village,
view the murals and picnic at the many picnic tables. Food can
be purchased at the Village Store or Tavern.
Stroll through the bush and listen to the tui,
bellbird and whirr of the Kereru as it flits to the Karaka trees.
Accommodation ranges from bed and breakfast /
farmstay / rural retreats, backpackers lodge or camping at the
Domain.
Visit any of the six gardens open by appointment
and another 3 at nearby Tiraumea (south on Route 52). Catering
for morning and afternoon teas and lunch is available on request.
Akitio Beach is approximately 30 minutes east.
North of Pongaroa on Route 52 is the turnoff for
the picturesque Waihi Falls. Approximately 20 - 25 minutes of
windy gravel road will take you to Horoeka and the splendour
of these falls where you may picnic under the shelter or take
a short walk to the base of the falls.
On the Akitio Coast Road are the Mangatiti Falls,
also spectacular but only accessible by foot and by arrangement
